ATOM Qld State Conference – Keynote Speakers Announced!

February 29, 2012 By ATOM Queensland

ATOM Qld is very excited to announce the first two keynotes for the ATOM Qld State Conference 25-26 May 2012. Both are leaders in their respective fields and have been in the “media” spotlight recently. You may have heard the media coverage of Axel Bruns current work in mapping twitter usage during the Qld floods. Mairi Cameron is a leading Queensland filmmaker, possibly best known at the moment for her filmclip for Washington which is a cracker of a music video with great intertextual references- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVd-ZsFjCS8&ob=av2e (get past the ad)

Axel Bruns

Dr Axel Bruns is an Associate Professor in the Creative Industries Faculty at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, and a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (http://cci.edu.au/). He is the author of Blogs, Wikipedia, Second Life and Beyond: From Production to Produsage (2008) and Gatewatching: Collaborative Online News Production (2005), and the editor of Uses of Blogs with Joanne Jacobs (2006; all released by Peter Lang, New York). Bruns is an expert on the impact of user-led content creation, or produsage, and his current work focusses especially on the study of user participation in social media spaces such as Twitter, especially in the context of acute events. His research blog is at http://snurb.info/, and he tweets at @snurb_dot_info. See http://mappingonlinepublics.net/ for more details on his current social media research.

Mairi Cameron

Mairi was launched as a director in 1999 with her short film Milk, which competed at Cannes, won prizes in Bilbao & Palm Springs, and was pre-selected for an Academy Award. For a number of years, Mairi worked as freelance director, directing a wide range of screen products. Now, as an equally passionate educator and practitioner, her focus has shifted to practice-led research as well as  filmmaking. Mairi is currently the Head of Film & Television at JMC Academy in Brisbane, and developing a research proposal for a doctorate on the development stage of Australian feature film production. I have a slate of feature films in development and continue to direct shorts and music videos. Last year, Mairi won a Triple J Award for her music video for local artist, Washington.
